Learning and adventure

The Life Environment Awareness foundation (LEAF) gets regular feed back through feedback mechanisms. It is fascinating how kids are thrilled about it all. Just look at some comments.

The feeling of a rain-drenched trek, with a heavy backpack, and the night coming alive, listening all the while to the music of the cicadas: or the good taste of a mug of lemon tea when a tenement brings it to you first thing in the morning. I had learnt a lot at the Wilderness Camp, and as I sit here in my house at Jayanagar I realize I am still learning" (Click to see photo)

-A Sandhya, X Std (15 years)
7th Wilderness Camp,Hulkunte Campus, HKP Outdoor, Nature School

“Throughout the year, at many camps I acquired adventurous skills like hanging belly-up and crawling hand-over-craft skill has left me confident of the harness I made and wore.”

-Sowmya B, X Std (15 years)
Amateur Naturalist awardee

“The emphasis was on interpersonal skills, like learning to live with my fellow camper, who mixes jam instead of sugar with tea, which no one else will drink, or coming to a decision about a camping site which everyone would like.”

-R M Harikrishna, I PUC (17 years)
Best camper, Basic Leadership Camp

“The most important things I learnt were like how to cope with darkness, how to camp comfortably in any kind of weather and how to enjoy the simple action of fetching water.”

-G S Vinutha, IX Std (13 years)
Best Camper awardee, IX Basic Nature Camp at Kenchanpura State Forest

“Before coming to the camp, I thought only boys, well built and tough, went to camps; and only the big ones became the leaders. Now I know that leadership means the ability to accept difficult conditions.”

-Latha S, X Std (14 years)
Amateur Naturalist awardee

“I developed a sense of responsibility to the environment around me. There was just enough time to ask a lot of questions and get excited about spending the rest of my life trying to answer them.”

-N S Ramesh Babu, X Std (14 years)
Awarded Amateur Naturalist Trophy

“On a cold night guarding the camp, with the camp fire blazing, responsibility towards my camp mates, sleeping in their cozy tents dawned on me. Gazing at the starts, listening to the jackal's howl and the hoot of the great Indian horned owl, made this most memorable time of my life.”

-C K Bhargavi X Std, Amateur Naturalist, awardee

“The best leader is one who exercise common sense and good judgment to help everyone travel safely and enjoyably through terrain.”

-N Basavaraj, PUC (17 years)
LEAF Volunteer, Banglore
